No matter what your hobby or pet pastime, there's always some undesirable aspect that has to be dealt with. If you're an athlete, you may have to spend the occasional Monday morning icing a pulled muscle. Sports spectators have to deal with hard bleacher seats, cold weather, and possibly obnoxious bellowing from the guy in the next row-unless you catch the game on TV, where you just have to put up with odd camera angles. Or let's say you like reading: Obsessive readers may end up with slight vision problems-in fact, graduate students in literature are often advised that they should expect (and be checked for) increased nearsightedness with each year of study. Too much TV can induce apathy and is positively correlated with depression and obesity (and with infomercials, a far worse fate). And most everybody enjoys video games, but if you enjoy them too much, you may-there are documented cases of this-incur a repetitive stress injury to your thumb. As for pet owners, well, let's not even talk about all the poop-scooping that becomes part of your life.

And cigar smokers have their own result of fun to consider. Specifically, the aromatic scent of their favorite cigar may attach to unwelcome places such as clothes. In fact, back when cigar smoking was the universal habit of Victorian gentleman, many of these smokers would maintain a separate outfit to wear when smoking, which would absorb the fumes. (Thus the terms "smoking jacket" and "smoking cap," which we still use.)

But it's the effect of a cigar scent settling on breath that some cigar smokers may find troublesome. The considerate cigar smoker is aware of this and plans accordingly. Here are some suggestions to help you pay for the enjoyment you've had-without paying too much!

1) Choose good cigars. This may seem like an obvious point, but the better-made the cigar, the less chemical the odor. Buy well-made, hand-rolled, long-filler cigars from a quality cigar outlet or online store.

2) For while you're smoking: Drink tea, or eat. (Mild-flavored teas are most recommended; as for foodstuffs, consider dark chocolates or other simple, strong-but-not-too-strong tastes.) "Cutting" your cigar with food or drink can help absorb both the aftertaste and the effects on breath.

3) Keep some fresh parsley on hand-or even a parsley plant in your kitchen or living room, or whatever room is nearest to the place where you smoke. This herb has traditionally come recommended for its odor-killing powers.

4) Chew gum. Mint-flavored gums are recommended, the stronger the better.

5) On that note, try chewing raw mint. As with parsley, you can keep it around in its herbal form and chew it undiluted after a cigar. You can also keep strong breath mints on hand.

6) Mouth sprays, as well as mouthwashes specifically intended for cigar smokers, are available commercially, and can be purchased from cigar stores or online cigar retailers. These are highly recommended. They're made by people who understand. Some of the anti-cigar-breath mouthwashes have the side benefit of clearing away the tar that might otherwise stain your teeth. If these mouthwashes aren't available, a typical mouthwash and a good tooth-brushing will be a lot better than nothing.

7) To avoid breath problems the next morning after a smoke: After a smoke, never go to bed without eating something. Even if it's just a tiny, simple snack, it "cuts" the cigar and reduces breath problems while seeming to absorb and clear away the odors in your mouth.

So, to recap: enjoy good cigars. Drink tea or eat while you smoke, or after you smoke. Brush your teeth like Mom said, and use a good mouthwash-perhaps especially a mouthwash intended for cigar smokers. And mint and thyme help too, especially for those days when you have to rush from your smoke to a work meeting or a date.

COMMON SENSE

Anyone who includes fire in a performance has a duty not only to himself, but to his audience, and the other acts in his profession.

One mistake, caused by lack of technique or concentration, or by sheer carelessness – the latter being quite unforgivable – can keep other performers out of employment, and worse still can endanger the performer, and the lives of other people.

In other words Fire Eating is NOT for the INEXPERIENCED or the IMMATURE person, be he 16 or 60.

You have got to know what you are doing to do, and be one hundred percent thorough in your preparation beforehand, as well as master of the situation while you are performing.

Fire eating is dangerous. Find a qualified fie arts instructor to teach you the art of fire eating.

Never attempt to fire eat under the influence of any drug, especially alcohol. Check your fire eating equipment before use to ensure it is free from danger. First practice the motions of fire eating with an unlit skewer. It is important to feel ‘comfortable’ with fire before attempting live fire-eating stunts. ‘Get to know’ your flame and become familiar with the way it burns before practicing fire eating stunts with a live flame.

Finding a good location...

The best spot for fire eating is in a high ceiling area free from overhanging flammable objects that is well ventilated, but without any noticeable breeze. If you are fire eating outdoors, make sure you are in a space that is resistant to wind, and in particular, changes in wind direction.

Unpredictable wind conditions are a major cause of fire eating burns.

Heat goes up...

Remember that! The biggest key to not burning yourself while fire eating or performing other localised fire stunts is that heat rises, and that under the flame is a smart place to be.

Breathing...

It is important to have excellent breath control while fire eating. It is imperative that you NEVER inhale while a flame is in your mouth. This can cause serious burns and poisoning by ingestion of harmful vapours. To prepare your breathing, practice simple breath control by breathing in slowly for 10 counts, holding for 10 counts, then exhaling slowly for another 10 counts. NEVER attempt fire eating while puffed or out of breath. Always be calm, focussed, and in control of your breathing. If you sense you are running out of breath while fire eating, remove the torch IMMEDIATELY.

What’s burning???

The fuel, of course! Which is why choice of fire eating fuel is so important. The role of the wick is to act like a sponge in which to soak up the fuel that will do the burning. Makeshift wicks or those constructed with cotton or cotton wool will deteriorate after just a few uses and may actually begin to burn if not extinguished before the fuel has evaporated out. Always change your cotton wad before your performance.

Alcohol...

Alcohol induces recklessness, impairs reaction times, and reduces muscle control. To breath fire safely requires cares awareness, good timing and good control of your breathing and lips.

THE BEGINNER

Fire SOL (aka Fire Water)

As you are just starting out, I would strongly recommend fire water also called fire sol, you are able to purchase this fluid from any Juggling or Magic Store, it is a much safer fuel to use and less flammable that most fuels. THE HARDEST STEP IN FIRE-EATING is the very first step, please take your time build up your confidence and knowledge then proceed to the next recommended fuel.

THE ADVANCED BEGINNER

Lighter fluid (Your second step)

When you make your fire sticks keep the cotton wad very small, not much bigger than the size of a bubble gum ball. When you start experimenting with lighter fluid be very very careful. Dip the fire torch into the bowl, use just a very small amount of fluid, shake the excess, walk 3 feet away from the bowl and light up. When you have mastered placing the small flame into the mouth you will soon gain more confidence. Proceed to build up your wad of cotton on your stick, the bigger the wad the larger the flame. So remember don’t soak the wad too much, just a little dip and shake. START SMALL AND BUILD it up. You will start to learn the characteristics of the fuel and how much fuel you will need necessary for your type of performance.

HODLING THE FLAME – TRANSFERRING THE FLAME

The ideal fluid to use is lighter fluid, lighter fluid is a much more flammable fuel and is more fast burning than fire water and when set alight has a stronger and brighter flame. A Liquid Fuel NOT To Be Careless With. Remember this fuel is highly flammable and could cause severe burns. Lighter fluid can be purchased from any hardware supermarket, or cigarette store, it comes in a bottle or a small tin can with a nozzle to release the fluid. Do not make the mistake of purchasing lighter gas, as this is not a liquid form. Lighter fluid is ideal for most of the fire tricks and stunts in this DVD as it has a higher vapour level than fire water. When you are practicing or performing DO NOT squirt the lighter fluid from the tin directly onto the torch as it may back fire.

ALWAYS Dip torches into a bowl, then shake excess.

Always shake excess off your torches, walk 5 feet away from the bowl, then ignite torch.

DO NOT IGNITE TORCH ABOVE THE BOWL OF FUEL

WARNING

DO NOT Attempt the blow out with Shell lite, lighter fluid or petrol.

YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE

If not performed correctly – Many fire eaters have DIED or been injured FOR LIFE through carelessness. I feel that I must caution you once more. The feat is DANGEROUS. If you don’t Blow Hard enough, the flame will shoot back into your face. Also, if you are slow in closing your mouth immediately the fuel is spent, you will almost certainly be burned. You must not try to perform the blow out with fuel until you have mastered the knack of blowing out water correctly.

I RECOMMEND NOT TO DO THIS STUNT

You can still perform a great and spectacular fire act without performing the BLOW OUT.

It’s your choice. If you don’t feel READY then DON’T DO IT.

PERFORMING OUTDOORS

Clothes made out of synthetic materials are not recommended as in general they are more flammable than natural materials like cotton. Do not wear a shell suit while fire breathing, they are highly flammable and shrink onto your skin and stick to your flesh while burning.

Hair – Fire breathing and facial hair which you are proud of do not mix well, beards, moustaches, eyebrows and mose alarmingly eyelashes are all at risk from a sudden change in wind direction, the smell of burning hair is actually less unpleasant than the appearance of the short spiky remnants of a freshly burnt beard.

IMPORTANT

• Never blow fire if the wind is too strong and never blow against the wind at anytime, always blow with the current of the wind.

Fuels – Never ever use SHELLITE, or LIGHT FLUID, or PETROL for the blow out as it is VERY HIGHLY flammable and could simply run back along the stream of vapour and burn your face, clothing or hair. I would strongly insist in Fire Sol or Parraffin lamp oil or kerosene and can be purchased at any hardware store.

DO NOT USE SHELL LITE, LIGHTER FLUID, PETROL FOR BLOW OUT

You will certainly pay the price WHEN DEALING WITH FIRE

Always be careful where people are standing when you are performing, make sure they are at least 10 feet away from you. Watch out for wandering toddlers and children as they might become excited and run towards you, watch out and be extra careful when performing in smaller venues, keep a careful eye on people standing close to your torches, and extra careful when performing in crowded night-clubs, restaurants, and street festival parades.

STAGE CURTAINS

• Always be extra careful where you spray your fuel of flame.

• If you are performing on a stage, please keep clear of curtains as they could catch a light in seconds if not careful.

• Stay a good distance away from the audience and do not spray towards the audience.

AIR C0NDITIONING

• Check for air conditioning and where the current of air is blowing as some club stages have air conditioning blowing down or across the stage, this is also caused by doors opened aside of stage, drafts are common especially in theatres, so check before you perform to have all doors closed for your performance.

TRAVELLING WITH FIRE FUEL

• Carry fuel in a proper “approved” fuel tin can and mark it clearly. (Fire – eating fuel DANGER).

• Always keep closed and sealed and away from children and toddlers.

AIRCRAFTS

• Never ever think about carrying fuel on aircrafts as there are heavy fines and penalties even imprisonment.

• If travelling interstate or overseas arrange with client to have fuel at their end ready for your performance.

FIRE EXSTINGUISHERS

• Always carry a small fire extinguisher/fire blanket and always especially a first aid kit containing bandages and burn cream. Keep at side of stage or close to where you are performing.

You can purchase the items in any major shopping store, car auto shop or hardware store.

WHEN FINISHED PERFORMING

Pour your liquid fuel back into a fuel container.

Do not pour fuel into a sink or toilet bowl as sometimes back stage people smoke and throw their cigarette butts into the toile bowls, this could start a fire. As for people sitting on the toilet they would be sitting on a time bomb if they dropped their cigarette into the bowl. Have common sense and dispose of your fire fuel into a container, close tightly and put away.

Do not leave any residue on the stage floor, wipe up as it could be slippery and dangerous, caution other acts on after you, especially dancers.

VENUES

If you are performing at a venue please talk to management as they would need to isolate fire alarms or smoke detectors before you perform, as most venues are very strict with fire regulations.

A client may call you for your performance at their special event or function, please advise them to contact the venue in which the function will be held and talk to management about the fire performance. You would not want to turn up at a function and be told by security that you are not able to perform with fire, some venues are okay and can isolate the fire alarms within 20 to 30 minutes, other venues can range from 1 to 2 days notice as they need to consult with management or security to isolate the alarms and sprinklers.

I have seen and heard of some instances where fire performers, rock bands with smoke machines have not told management, as fire alarms being set off and fire brigades arriving at the venue.

WHO HAS TO PAY THE FIRE BRIGADE BILL?

YOU - $500 to $1500

So please be careful and be one step ahead.

FIRE TORCHES

Always carry two to four torches, each torch can last up to three minutes, when finished pick up a new fresh torch. This is good and safe advice for podium fire-eaters as you are usually on stage for one or two dance numbers, that’s around six minutes, a torch could wear out and the cotton wad could fall apart or smoulder, it is safer not to dip a smouldering torch into a bowl of fuel as it could set alight. The best way and absolutely the safest way is to place the old torches down and replace with one or two fresh torches.

THE BOWL OF FUEL

The bowl of fuel needs to be heavy duty metal, do not use plastic bowls as liquid can burn through. I would strongly recommend a heavy duty chrome champagne bucket and place the tin of fluid into the champagne bucket. You can purchase a champagne bucket at any kitchen or food catering product store. Also a chrome champagne bucket stand in which you can place the bucket into. This looks very professional, looks great on stage and is much safer than having the bowl on the floor, as you can trip over your bucket and spill the fuel all over the stage. When performing fire-eating, always stay 5 feet away from the bowl and especially when performing the blow out. The bowl should be well behind you.

DO NOT HAVE THE BOWL IN FRONT OF YOU WHEN PERFORMING THE BLOW OUT.

DO NOT light up your torch above the bowl of liquid dip, shake, then walk 5 feet away from the bowl then ignite the torch.

BURNS: First aid

To distinguish a minor burn from a serious burn, the first step is to determine the degree and the extent of damage to body tissues. The three classifications of first-degree burn, second-degree burn and third-degree burn will help you determine emergency care.

First-degree burn

The least serious burns are those in which only the outer layer of skin (epidermis) is burned. The skin is usually red, with a swelling and pain sometimes present. The outer layer of skin hasn’t been burned through. Treat a first-degree burn as a minor burn unless it involves substantial portions of the hands, feet, face, groin or buttocks, or a major joint.

Second-degree burn

When the first layer of skin has been burned through and the second layer of skin (dermis) also is burned, the injury is termed a second-degree burn. Blisters develop and the skin takes on intensely reddened, splotchy appearance. Second-degree burns produce severe pain and swelling.

If the second-degree burn is no larger than 2 to 3 inches in diameter, treat it as a minor burn. If the burned area is larger of it the burn is on the hands, feet, face, groin or buttocks, or over a major joint, get medical help immediately.

For minor burns, including second-degree burns limited to an area no larger than 2 to 3 inches in diameter, take the following action:

• Cool the burn. Hold the burned area under cold running water for at least 5 minutes, or until the pain subsides. If this is impractical, immerse the burn in cold water or cool it with cold compresses. Cooling the burn reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin. Don’t put ice on the burn.

• Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage. Don’t use fluffy cotton, which may irritate the skin. Wrap the gauze loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Bandaging keeps air off the burned skin, reduces pain and protects blistered skin.

• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Never give aspirin to children or teenagers.

Minor burns usually heal without further treatment. They may heal with pigment changes, meaning the healed area may be a different colour from the surrounding skin. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, fever, swelling or oozing. If infection develops, seek medical help. Avoid re-injuring or tanning if the burns are less than a year old – doing so may cause more extensive pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen on the area for at least a year.

Caution

• Don’t use ice. Putting ice directly on a burn can cause frostbite, further damaging your skin.

• Don’t break blisters. Broken blisters are vulnerable to infection.

Winter weather in most of the south will usually not interfere with a good backyard barbeque. Most of us don't have to be concerned with sweeping snow off the grill in order to burn a steak. Our biggest challenge in the first cookout of the year is dusting the spiders and crickets out of the charcoal tray.

If you'll be using charcoal and a liquid lighter, know what kind of accelerant you're going to be pouring on those briquettes. It's not the volume of the whoooomp you hear when you light the fire that determines whether you coals will burn evenly or not.

Be wise and never use gasoline, lacquer thinner, lantern fuel and any of the highly combustible solutions you can buy at the paint store. Any of those can light up the night like a roman candle, and you with it. Pay the extra dollar and stick with charcoal lighter even though its fragrance may linger on the meat you're cooking.

Kerosene is another flammable liquid to avoid; not because of its ability to start a fire but because it will really stink up your food. It's a slow burner and no matter how long you let your briquettes flame, those barbequed ribs and T-Bones will taste like kerosene. It's best to stay with fuels that won't stink up the food.

The best method I've found for lighting charcoal is the chimney starter. They're basically metal cylinders with holes near the bottom for ventilation. There's a grate in the bottom of the chimney that holds charcoal. All you have to do is stuff newspaper under the grate, light it and watch the flames attack the briquettes. In just a minute the charcoal will be burning with no aroma of petrochemicals in the air.

I use my electric smoker if I'm cooking something larger than a steak or pork chops. Through experience I've learned to make sure the lava rocks in the heating pan are dry! Most folks will have stored their smoker in the garage or on the porch during winter, but if they have been left outside, they'll usually have water in the bottom of the tray.

Water and electricity don't mix. When you plug the cord into the socket, step back! The electric heating iron in the smoker will explode, leaving you with a piece of raw meat. If that happens, you'll have to go back to your charcoal grill and hope that the Boston Butts or turkey will fit inside. Check the smoker the day before and if there's water in the bottom of the heating tray, give it time to dry out before you start cooking.

Since its winter, there's the likelihood that you won't want to spend a lot of time outdoors cooking meat so it would make sense to grill steaks or pork chops because they cook faster than something large. Place a little more charcoal on the grill than you would use in the spring or summer.

The outside temperature does make a difference in the length of time it takes to cook your meat. Watch your rib eyes or center cut pork chops carefully so that they're cooked to your specifications when you take them off the grill. Cook the meat a little longer.

All the worry about constant temps in the winter is erased when you have a gas grill. Just preheat the grill to the required temperature and cook away. This is an easy way to grill just about anything, from grilled steaks to barbequed chicken. You won't get the smoky taste that comes from a charcoal grill, but it's more convenient.

The only drawback I see with winter time barbequing is daylight. It gets darker earlier so make sure you have plenty of light to work with. Either that or have a strong flashlight.

These aren’t people who have ‘pack rat fever’ and save items just to have them, but people who decide to enter a specific collectibles market because it is a rewarding and fun experience for them. And it seems people will collect just about anything including: teddy bears, coins, stamps, advertising memorabilia, books, comic books, sports memorabilia, vinyl records.…..why the list seems endless. But they all have one thing in common, a passion for their hobby and their specific collectible.

But what if something unforeseen happens, a fire or some other catastrophe? A unique insurance agency called Collectibles Insurance Services; LLC is here to offer peace of mind and, most importantly, insurance for their collectibles.

I spoke with Dan Walker and Debbie Spilman of Collectibles Insurance Services, LLC, about collecting and why it is important to have insurance on your treasured collectibles.

“Some may think that they’re homeowners insurance policy covers their collectibles, but in most cases your homeowners policy is designed to cover personal property and is not nearly enough to protect your treasured collectibles,” said Dan. “They may limit the collection to a percentage of the total value of your home, limit the amount that they will pay for theft of valuable items like silver, crystal, guns, stamps and paper documents or be based on actual cash value rather than the collectible or replacement value.”

Collectibles Insurance Services (www.collectinsure.com) differs from the average homeowners’ insurance policy, in that, insuring collectibles is all they do. The service can insure a collection of stamps, advertising memorabilia, sports cards, vinyl records, antique tools, vintage clothing, trains, toys, weapons (guns, knives swords), entertainment memorabilia and much more (see the website for a complete list and exclusions of what they insure).

“Normal homeowners policies don’t generally deal with collectibles, we write policies specifically for a person’s collectibles, whether it is a rare book collection, stamps, coins, sports cards, vinyl records and the many other collectibles that we deal with every day” explained Dan.

Valuation of a collection is subjective and estimating what a certain collection is worth depends on many variables and researching different avenues.

“We strongly encourage prospects from overvaluing their collections. We cannot insure ‘emotional worth’, but can insure a varying array of collectibles. We ask that people have a paper trail, save receipts for what they may have paid for items; documentation is very helpful, take video of the collection or pictures. Validation is an important element. Don’t over insure and if necessary get a second opinion,” detailed Debbie.

How does one go about ascertaining the value of a collection or their collectibles?

“Price guides are great, but they are just one of the tools used when trying to gauge a value of a collection,” explained Dan. “Replacement value would be what a knowledgeable buyer would pay a knowledgeable seller for the items, it is an agreed upon price between two knowledgeable individuals in a sales transaction. You must price your collectibles realistically for insurance purposes.”

“The valuation process could also be aided by a professional appraisal (although that is not always necessary), professional consensus, price guide values, what the collectibles may be selling for on the market at the specific time, our own resources and expertise and because no two collections are the same, all these factors are available in helping people determine what the value is. We also have a number of resources on file and references listed on the website including valuation aides, inventory aides and dealers to help people along so they can put a figure on the collections worth in which to write a policy” said Dan.

What kind of resources that are used in the valuation process depends on the items in the collection, as Debbie explains:

“We provide reference to many entities in the process including obtaining information from the Kovels.com, American Stamp Dealers Association, Price Miner, Antique Trader, Beckett.com, CBGXtra.com (for comic book collections), collect.com, Goldmine publications, Military Trader, trains.com and a number of other resources, depending on the genre of the collectible.”

I inquired about insurance when you are moving the items, from whether down the street or across the country; doesn’t the moving company provide insurance for that?

“Submitting a claim to them is much more difficult to do, as the moving companies would require much more documentation to validate a claim if there were breakage or something else were to happen,” explained Debbie. “Again, validating just how much the collectibles are worth is a key element in settling a claim.”

A myth with regard to collectibles insurance is that every item in the collection must be itemized and professionally appraised.

“No appraisals are necessary. You estimate the value of your collection and determine the amount of insurance, we need a ballpark figure,” detailed Dan. “Although an inventory is not always required at the time of application to purchase insurance, Collectibles Insurance Services strongly recommends its customers maintain an inventory to streamline, provide proof, and expedite claims in the event of a loss.”

Another myth regarding insuring collectibles is that the cost would be more than people could reasonably afford.

“A collectibles policy is typically less costly than scheduling items on your homeowners insurance,” said Dan. “The price of insurance should not deter a person from insuring their collections, the items are priceless to the hobbyist or collector and you will find our rates are not overbearing and are cost-efficient. We cover everything from autographs to Zippos or something in between. And Collectibles Insurance Services’ carriers are A rated and above.”

It is reassuring to know that purchasing insurance for your collection is not as difficult as one might think it to be. The process is not such a daunting task as it seems and it is also reassuring to know that there are professionals specifically trained in this field and a company that specializes in just this type of insurance.
